I'm gonna stop numbering these.....

Mainly because our days are starting to merge and melt into one another.. with one day being almost indistinguishable from the next. That's not to say that NYC is boring us (Far from it)... but the days, and events taking place in those days, are beginning to meld....

You know what's a great invention? Those toilets that flush automatically when you get off the pot. Those are great aren't they? I saw this thing on Dateline and they talked about how many billion germs there are on those toilet handles. It's disgusting, so I feel that this invention marks an important step in the progression of mankind. Now, if they could only mass-market nail clippers that catch the nail once it's been clipped.... These are the kinds of thoughts that tend to keep me occupied for hours.

American theaters are so much cooler than Kuwaiti ones. You can put your feet up on the chair in front of you without some indian guy telling you "hatha mai jooz, mama." or blinding you with their flashlight. Also, they don't check your tickets at the door to the theater which is what made it possible for me and FB to enjoy two movies (and counting!) for free. Don't you just love the American Way?

hmmm.... What else? Oh, yeah! There are some F-ah-iiiiiiiiine men in New York City!! I swear to God! A girl could get whip-lashed just walking down the street! Royal Hot-ness.... the kind that makes a girl feel frisky... if you know what I'm sayin'... ;)

Day 5 or 6 or maybe even 7... I'm not really sure...

It's Thanksgiving today and you know what? Holidays in New York are exactly like the movies! I swear to the high heavens! Everyone has got their x-mas lights up and stuff.. It's really..... nostalgic. I know the word nostalgic probably doesn't really fit since I've never been here before, but the word somehow works. I'm always telling people that I believe there are certain places in the world that, even if you've never been there, it kinda feels like home... In that you feel like you know it, inherently. Anyway, that's kinda how I'm feeling about NYC.. hence the use of the word nostalgic.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade went by today.... most notable event? The Pink Panther Baloon smacked into and knocked over a light post. It was total lames-ville!

We went to a movie last night, then snuck into another movie for free... the movie was Rent, it kinda sucked so it's a good thing we didn't pay for it... :P

Day 4 in NYC: Quizno's, Freddy Mercury and The Gotham

So, as faithful readers (basically DR and 7!) will remember, FB and I had a slow start to our day today. It's Sunday and so nothing really happens til noon so we stayed in. We watched Madagascar and pretty much spent the hour after the movie watching clips of those adorable military penguins! Those little devils are such scene stealers

Sidenote: how sad is it that we actually spent time doing that?

At about one we hit up Quizno's for lunch followed by a walk down to Union Square. That place is cool. Much, MUCH cooler than the one in San Fransisco (I don't know why I'm comparing them... It's not like its a restaurant chain or something...) but anyway, we found this street performer there. He was this Freddy Mercury wannabe (for those of you who do not know Freddy, he was the lead singer of the band Queen... If you don't know who Queen was, they were the band who made such hits as 'Another one bites the dust', 'We will rock you', 'We are the champions'.. etc.etc.. If you still have no idea what I'm talking about well then... you need a serious introduction to pop culture..) Anywho, he was this cool little street performer. He was swallowing fire and juggling all kinds of crap. His act was cool.. punctuated with jokes and Queen songs. Sadly though, at the end, he wanted everyone to join him in a sing along of 'We are the champions'.. only the crowd was pretty much all tourists ( clarification: I'm beginning to refer to all non-americans as tourists) and so there were only like five of us singing along... then the guy got up on these guys shoulders and wanted to be passed along the crowd... like those stage divers at concerts... only when he got to our side, the crowd started thinning out and he nearly fell flat on his face! It was at this point that he decided to abandon this idea....

Tonight we began our tour of the comedy clubs starting with The Gotham. It was a nice place... aside from the fact that it was located beside what seemed to be some sort of ghetto convention! Anyway, it's a cozy little place with good food and a great atmosphere. The comedians were pretty good as well. Some solid Comedy Central regulars, some amateurs, but it was all good. Definately worth going to again. Next we're hitting The Improv! :D

Day 3 in NYC: Times Square is off the HizZaNk!

*This pic pretty much summarizes New York for me. I love it.

Starbucks has started using the holiday cups... which means no more starbucks quotes for you lot... unless "Careful, the beverage you're about to enjoy is extremely hot." counts as a quote. In which case, I can only use it so many times before lame-syndrome kicks in!

So, this post is a day late 'cos we were completely knackered last night and fell into bed by 9 pm!! That's a sin in New York, I know, but when the bed calls, it calls... Besides I think we're still suffering from a bit of jet lag.

Anyway, so yesterday we walked up 5th avenue and over to Herold Square for more, yup you guessed it, S.H.O.P.P.I.N.G.!! Contrary to what you may think, FB and I are not shoppaholics, it's just that we packed sparsely and so have arrived in NY very underequipped! A girl needs options you know?

So then, we walked over to Times Square which was insane! That place is serious sensory overload! And packed with tourists (As if FB and I aren't technically tourists!)

We went to this sweet little out-of-the-way mexican place for dinner. It was on this side street which we would have totally missed if it wasn't right down the street from our apt. It was an awesome place. Nice staff. Kicking music. Boobies on the walls... (Which we tried to take a pic of for proof, but the place was too damn dark for pics)... pretty much everything you could hope for in a New York dive. Very cool indeed.

FIreberry sidenote:

So like...um...like Krispy and I have like a like-disease syndrome where we are totally like affected by 'Laguna-beach', like the fake OC and we like can't stop saying the word 'like'... like

What else did we like do yesterday?? Oh we went to a fair where they sold all kinds of crap...Including massages...GROSS! We ended up buying T-shirts with dirrrty slogans on them...We totally fell in love with them and I bought like 8 of them. In our next diary/post we'll upload some pics of them...

We walked down 5th Avenue yesterday from 45th street all the way to 29th street and can u believe it?? We played the sex and the city game of 'who-would-you-fuck?' and we could only find one guy we would ACTUALLY fuck!! That's insane!! Either we're getting too picky or the guys in New Fuckin' York are like totally unfuckable!!

Apparently my sense of direction heightens in New York, specifically from our elevator all the way to the door to our flat...That's my domain, I guess the elevator disorients Krispy's sense of direction...Everytime we get on that elevator she always seems to be headed in the opposite direction! I'm like that all the time, so it's a nice change :P

End of Fireberry sidenote:

So that was yesterday. It's sunday morning now and we're having a slow start to our day. Tonight should be good though, we're hitting the comedy circuit!! More on that later :D

Day One in NYC

We were up and crackin' by 7am... jet lag was slowly but surely tightening the noose. Here in NY, we are literally surrounded by Starbucks, so that's where we spent our morning. After last night's downpour, it was F.R.E.E.Z.I.N.G.!!! 0The kind of cold that goes straight to your bones, you know?

By ten o'clock we knew that the shops had opened up and so decided to spend our first day shopping... we're soooooo Kuwaiti, I know! :P So, we walked from our apt, which is in the east upper-20's all the way up to Central Park... so, it was quite a walk, but we passed the most amazing shops on the way, I mean besides all of the big chains. By the time we made it to Central Park we were completely shattered! We had lunch at this little italian place and then made the long trek back downtown. Isn't it funny how the walk going somewhere is always so much more fun than the walk back?

Later tonight, FB's cousin, who shall also go by the initial F, showed up at our place to take us on a guided tour of SOHO. No problem, except for the fact that F has only been here for two months and so is only, marginally, more clued in than we are! But we went with the flow and followed this guy all around SOHO. F also showed us how to use the subway... surprisingly easy provided you can recognize colors and have an elementary command of the english alphabet!

We had dinner at Cipriani's. This so called NY Hotspot where apparently all the models go and supposedly P Diddy likes to throw parties there. Turns out to be this pretentious little italian place with a wait-list as long as my arm and the stuffy attitudes to go along with it! We ended up sitting outside which wasn't half bad after the madman next door, who kept telling people not to turn their backs on him (?), decided to leave. We managed to have a good time regardless, but by ten thirty I was freezing and felt like my bottom half was gonna completely detach itself from it's northern neighbor.

So, now we're back at the apt. FB has gone to bed... poor baby isn't feeling very well and I'm hitting the sack as well.

P.S. How lucky am I that I get to go to sleep with the top of the Empire State Building in my window?

P.P.S. I'm gonna be signing my NY posts using quotes lifted off of my morning Starbucks cup. :D

New F*ckin' York, Baby!!

Note on pic: We don't know this guy... this pic will soon be replaced by one of us! :P

The Trip to N-F*ckin' YC:
13 hours of assorted sleeping positions, sucky food and smelly feet....

So the trip to NYC (direct) from Kuwait took 13 excrutiating hours! Or fourteen and a half if you count the hour and a half we spent on the runway OR 11 1/2 hours if you count that hour and a half as part of the journey!! (Fireberry's math)

For those of you who don't know, Fireberry (Now and for the duration of this diary to be known as FB) and I, Krispy Dixie (or KD, which is not really suitable since I don't have that many KD's to convert... *sob*) Anyway, so we're in NYC for the next couple of months... supposedly on assignment, but really just for fun (or simply a paid vacation!)

We left Kuwait on maybe the first real rainy day of the winter causing an hour and a half delay on the runway... take off was bumpy, but then again take-offs usually are ( Apply any interpretation you want to the word Take-off)

Kuwait Airways, as usual, was a delight! NOT!!! The food was crap... the movies were even crappier (considering they showed the same six movies over and over and over again...)

We were somewhere over Budapest when FB and I started experimenting with sleeping positions that would maximize our comfort over our three seat domain... This was probably the most fun, not to mention most visually enticing, part of the trip! Said positions ranged from the PG to the, most definately, R-rated... needless to say, our male, mostly indian, neighbors were very pleased! :P

It was somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean when I began to notice that the cabin was beginning to smell like pooh.....

FB and I spent the remainder of the trip playing dirty games and making up "Dream Man" lists...

______________________________________________________________________

Most people. when arriving in New York City, would go to a grocery store... maybe a pharmacy... maybe a restaurant.... The Krispy Klan, on the other hand, opts to go to The Museum Of Sex!!!! And that is exactly where we went after we dropped off our bags at the apt. The Museum of Sex, conveniently located two blocks from our apt (coincidence?? I think not), totally rocks! The best part is definately the gift shop! The rest of the museum consists of such enlightening things as... The history of gay porn.... The progression of the blue movie.... The Gallery of Sex Machines... Trust me, this is a FABulous place to be! Quite possibly the most beneficial museum we have ever been to. :P

Dinner was Quizno's (YUM) followed by showers (seperate :P) and sleep!

Words of Wisdom....

"Hope..... which whispered from Pandora's box only after all the other plagues and sorrows had escaped, is the best and last of all things. Without it, there is only time. And time pushes at our backs like a centrifuge, forcing us outward and away, until it nudges us into oblivion....... It's a law of motion, a fact of physics.... Like all things in the universe, we are destined from birth to diverge. Time is simply the yardstick of our seperation. If we are particles in a sea of distance, exploded from an original whole, then there is a science to our solitude. We are lonely in proportion to our years."

"The Setup" : the saga continues...

So, me and the freaky-looking marriage prospect are sitting at Starbucks and he's telling me his entire life story (which FYI, I did not ask for! There should be a law against people just blurting out unsolicited life stories...) Anyway, so he gets up to go get a cup of coffee and when he comes back I had been sending a message. Ya3ny it showed that I was sending an SMS. So, he sits down, looks over at me and goes...

Him: "You sending an S.O.S.??"

* ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? *

So, I'm thinkin' this guy is either clairvoyant or he's been in this situation before with a similar outcome... I burst out laughing which, of course, gave away the fact that I was indeed sending out an S.O.S.!!! But I shrugged it off politely and changed the subject.

Anyway, so about fifteen minutes later I finally get a call from my mom, who has been conveniently absent during this whole ordeal, saying that she's waiting for me by my car. So, this guy, very politely I have to say, offers to walk with me. However, he asks me a question that I don't think should ever be asked when walking a lady to her car...

......................
Are you ready for this??
..................
It's a hum-dinger!
...............

Him: "So, do you like STALKERS?"

** Red Lights and Sirens are blazing now **

Me: "Umm... no....."

At this point, I'm thinking it can't get much worse.... but it does.... oh, lord it does!

Him: "'Cos you've got one now!"

..........................................................
..............................................
.................................

Where do these people come from?? I'm so glad I'm leaving the country at the end of the week and don't have to be subjected to proof of his intentions...

Possible titles for this post: Better to Talk than to Stalk... Waterloo and the Shiny Gold Coin.... My Mother Belongs in an Insane Asylum....

I got home the other night and my mom cornered me in my room saying she wanted to go out so I said sure, where do you wanna go? So she tells me we should go to the Co-Op and sit at Starbucks. I, in my surprisingly trusting state, say "sure let's go."
So, we head to the Co-Op and sit in Starbucks when suddenly.....

Note: Names, events and places have been changed to protect both the psychotic and disowned.

So, this complete stranger walks up to our table and goes... "Hi, are you Mary?" to my mom, to which she replies...

My, formally cool, but currently disowned mom: "Yes, are you Mish3al?"
Former stranger, now identified as Mish3al: "Yes"
Mom: "Hi, this is my daughter Summer."

Mish3al shakes hands with the both of us... all the while smiling in a somewhat creepy fashion... It is at this point that my gut reaction starts working overtime, informing me that it would be wise for me to get the hell out of there.

Mom: "Please, sit down."
Strange man sits...

* Red Lights and sirens go off *

This guys' butt wasn't even fully in the seat before...

Mom: "I need to get something from the Co-Op... I'll be right back."

.................
............

Yes, my mom abandoned me at Starbucks with this strange person! She was out of there before I could even get a word out! And here I am, in a hottie-filled Starbucks, sitting with this strange, slightly demonic looking, person! So, this guy and I sit there looking at each other for what seems like an eternity.. I am totally wigging out and this guy is just smiling at me as if this were the most normal encounter in the world!

Him, whose name I can not bring myself to type (mainly b/c the name I made up is too damn annoying to type :P) : "You have no idea what's going on do you?"
Me: "No... What is going on?"
Him: "Well, my mom knows someone who knows someone who knows someone (This is all true, people... you can't make this stuff up.) who knows your mom. And they thought that we would get along and so I asked if I could meet you."

It is at this point that I know fully and completely, with the kind of conviction that stems from your very core, that we would most definately not get along.

Chemistry... real chemistry is the kind of thing you can't plan for. It is something that hits you hard in your gut when you first meet someone. It is that little voice in your head that says "Ahh... this person would be nice to know..." rather than "Where is the nearest exit?"... It is a feeling quite unlike any other.. A feeling which can not be summoned, duplicated or ignored.

I can't remember much of the rest of the conversation... suffice to say it wasn't scintillating stuff... It wasn't really his fault. I could tell he was trying (failing miserably), but trying nonetheless.. When it's not right, you just know.

Although there are ways to make matters worse... Illustrations of which shall follow in subsequent posts....

Women, Chocolate, Shampoo.... and Orgasms evidently....

What's the deal with the adverts that depict women experiencing the Big 'O as they devour a piece of milk chocolate or go about washing their hair??

Even the arab satellite channels show women indulging (quite erotically) in a certain 'galaxy' of chocolaty goodness... It borders on pornographic..

Chocolate is associated with sex, so I'm inclined to let that one slide. However, the shampoo + water + you (alone!)in the shower = Orgasm! is pushing it a little in my book... I mean seriously, who is this ad targeting? Are women supposed to be buying this shampoo or men?

If a woman can go around and have sex (sans shampoo) then it would seem silly for her to settle for one of the ' rinse, lather, repeat ' variety. And if she can't go around having sex and must settle for this kind of "O" .. well then... that's just sad....

Bright Lights, Big City

She had done it. She had made the mistake she had sworn she would never make. And right now as Dalia stood looking down at Ahmed, she realized that she had little-to-no control over her life, actions or feelings. She felt utterly and incomprehensibly dejected. As if her mental abilities held no sway over her emotional and physical domains. Her time in New York had come to an end and the most important thing to materialize from the trip was suddenly, irreversibly over. Ahmed sat on the couch in his impeccably furnished midtown apartment. He seemed to be taking her impending departure with the same ease and complacency with which he had pursued their entire time together. His cavalier attitude was more than Dalia could take. She could barely stand to look at him and so she turned her back to him and gazed out his windows at the lights of Times Square twinkling in the distance.

"You honestly don't even care, do you?" She asked, her breath making moist circles on the window pane.
"About what, babe?" He replied, spooning himself another helping of Chinese fried rice.
"Exactly." She said, turning to him with her hands on her hips.
He finally looked up at her with a puzzled look on his face. "What? What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about us, Ahmed.. Or does 'us' only really exist in my head?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" He asked calmly, leaning back as he poked at the rice with his chopsticks.

It truly amazed her how a man who was so passionate and ferocious in the bedroom could be so utterly cold on every other matter and in every other situation. She had never seen him mad.. never seen him annoyed... It was as if his very existence could only be surmised by an encounter of a sexual nature.

"It means... It means, what the hell is this? You and me. We've been together for what? five, six months now? And I'm leaving in two days and it's like you don't even care." She said, shaking her head in disbelief.
"It's not that I don't care... It's just... Madry.. It's not like we said that this was a committed, 'relationship' type thing. Come on, Dalia. I thought we were just having fun."
"Having fun?" She snickered. "Yeah, we've been having fun alright. And now it seems that instead of you thinking of me as a companion.. as someone you could really be with, I, somehow, gave you the impression that I was nothing more than a fuck-buddy!"
"Dalia." He said, putting his bowl of rice on the coffee table and spreading his hands. "That's not fair. I have treated you with nothing but respect. If all I saw you as was a fuck-buddy, would I have taken you to all the places we've been? Would I have hung out with you and slept over at your place even when there was no sex involved?" He gave her a look that told her he knew that she knew he was right.
"All I'm saying is.." She dropped her defensive stance. " is that I thought that this would transform into something more meaningful at some point."

"Something more meaningful? Like what? Marriage? Dalia, we've been through this plenty of times.. you know how I feel about marriage.."
"Yeah, I know." She said, raising her voice in exasperation. "But so what? Are you just gonna be a bachelor for the rest of your life? What about security.. What about companionship?.. What about.."
"What about it?" He said, cutting her off. He stood up and hardened his tone. "I'm sorry if you had some convoluted fairy tale fantasy going on in your head, Dalia, but I am not responsible for that. Whatever illusions that you have been entertaining are of your own making. I have been nothing, but honest about you and about my intentions ..."
"Or lack thereof.." She interrupted.
"Whatever! The point is that I have, at no point, even hinted at the idea that this would be more than a fling or casual relationship. We had fun and now it's time for you to go home and so this will just be something that happened between us at this point in time.. It does not need to go any further than that." He finished and stood facing her with a look of determination on his face. It was as if he were willing her to get the point.

Dalia looked up at him in stark amazement. She was stunned speechless.. more from his emotional outburst than what he had said. He had sprung to life as he had said those things to her and it was stupid and she hated herself for it, but she loved him more in that moment than in any other. Tears welled up in her eyes and her vision blurred. She looked down at her feet, visibly resigned to the fact that she had absolutely no power over her universe. It was the cruelest, most real, most bitter-sweet moment her short life had ever seen. She felt her feet move beneath her towards the armchair that held her bag and coat. Without a word she slipped on her overcoat and shouldered her bag. He didn't say anything.. He didn't try to stop her or console her. He knew it was pointless to do so. She walked to the door and turned the knob, pulling it open. She stopped for an instant and turned to face him.

"New York... This city... It'll always be about you and me." She said, shaking her head in wonder. Then she turned and walked out of his door... out of his life.

Question of the day....

Why do we say "I saw a pregnant woman"? The word 'pregnant', as per it's original definition, is perhaps the most gender specific word in the english language. Why not say something like...

Her: "I saw a pregnant at the grocery store today... reminded me I need to get a watermelon..."

Weird I know, but not any weirder than Kaleidoscope! Seriously, who's the genius who thought that word up!?

What do you say, guys!? Shall we start a generation that refers to pregnant women as "Pregnants"?? I think we can make it work!

3eedy mbarak? Yeah, whatever...

I came to a quiet and yet, somehow, revolutionary revelation (wordplay anyone?) this morning. I am not a 3eed person... That's right. The three or four day holiday which celebrates the end of one month of torture... I mean, religious awareness... just does not sway me one bit.. I have a sneaking feeling that this general abhorrance to this holiday has roots that stretch far into my childhood. Perhaps this feeling has been quietly filed away in my subconscious, sharing the domain with my fear of harees and my Anjelina complex... Allow me to illustrate:

1. I stopped buying new "Eid" clothes when I was eight.
2. I have not now, nor have I ever, reserved a special outfit for "Eid", refusing to wear it until Eid when I would parade around the malls in my new duds. (As if people know that they're new!)
3. By the age of thirteen, I was actually begging my male relatives not to give me any money. I found that to be so humiliating and, somehow, offensive.
4. The best Eid of my life was the Eid after I got my job. (See illustration #3 for reason.)
5. Celebrating Eid, for me, is about taking my first morning trip to Starbucks in a month, walking in and accepting a coffee that was made for me in under three minutes. Now that's love.
6. The only good thing about the first day of Eid this year was me sitting at my PC, typing out this post with my cat curled up in my lap purring.

So, folks, that's my Eid in a nutshell. For all of you that truly enjoy this time of the year, I extend my congratulations and felicitations on this holy holiday! O 3asakom it3oodoona inshalla :)

I am Woman.... Hear me Roar!

Hi... My name is Shakira. I love being splayed out on everything from table-tops to counter tops to floors. My favorite things include contorting my belly in snake-like movements for the pleasure of my male fans as well as for the disdain of my female fans.. I love to be covered in crap... literally.. Didn't you see my 'whenever, whatever' video? To the naked eye, it would appear that I was covered in mud, when in fact it was crap!

For my new video I'm going all out though! I, Shakira, am raising the bar that all other female stars will forever shy away from... I will be covered from head to toe in oil... not baby oil... not sex oil.... but actual oil... you know? the kind you find on oil rigs and stuff... Eat that J-Lo!!

La Tortura,
Shakira

You can find me in da joint....

Ok, so this is a pic of a billboard advertising 50 Cent's new movie... Apparently the movie is about a crack dealer who gives up his life of crime to pursue his passion i.e. music... hmmm... I wonder if 50 Cent can play that convincingly... might be a bit of a stretch for him....

P.S. Am I the only one who notices that this billboard is situated outside of what appears to be a prison?? ... I guess that's what you call a cruel irony...
