Dashboard Confessional # 3: I got too much food on my plate...

I'm always astounded by talented people. I mean, truly talented people, not Britney Spears or David Spade or even Janet Jackson (who, pre- Super Bowl at least, was taken as a quasi-serious artist).. No, I'm talking about truly talented individuals.

Writers or authors can implant within me a feeling of awe and, at times, gut-wrenching envy. Dan Brown... when The DaVinci Code came out, I wanted to kill Dan Brown. How could one guy, one unheard of guy, write such an incredible story? ....
Mya Angelou, Harper Lee, e.e. cummings, Percy Shelley, W.H. Auden.... How could these people even exist? I read their stuff and it just perfectly embodies something that I feel or think and I'll just hate them for expressing it so well. It kind of feels as if they've stolen something from me. By expressing my emotion so perfectly, better even than I could have, I feel robbed. It's as if they've chipped away a little piece of my soul and sucked it into the page. It's like that feeling, that high you get when you first read a really great book and yet you hate the fact that you'll never be able to get that high off of the same book again. Simply because that high has been sucked into the pages, to rest forever between the lines, suspended in chapters...

Even though a good amount of my awe, and a considerable amount of my jealousy, goes to writers, the grand portion of my wonderment is stored for singer/songwriters. Because you see, it's not enough for the person to have a good singing voice. After all, plenty of people can sing. It's when they have the entire package. When they can sing, write lyrics and write music. It is at this point that I am floored. How can so much talent be crammed into one little person... or two or three..? It doesn't seem fair to me. These people are so effortless in the way they let go. They let go in a way I never can and don't think I ever could. They are unashamed... brave... highly tuned... effortlessly raw and uninhibited... Everything I am in my loneliest hours....

These are the people who breathe for me....

Jason Mraz
John Mayer
Rob Thomas
Dave Matthews Band
Jewel

you have a beautiful choice of people who breathe for you, apparently 3 out of the 5 breathe for me too, Mraz, Mayer and Thomas who i love so much, do you know how many times i have replayed his songs i never get tired of them. never going to or will. great post might i add. :)

Thank you and welcome to my blog. :D

Those three are my faves. I've been a fan of Rob since early Matchbox Twenty (when their name was written with a number :D)

I fell in love with John Mayer after "You Body is a wonderland" came out... but I like his more obscure stuff... things that never made it to radio...

As for Jason... *sigh* I'm on a Mraz cloud right now and I fear I will never touch the ground again....

All right...I read Angels & Demons AND the Da Vinci Code...they were both good reads BUT...BUT...it was as if I was reading an intricate movie script. Okay, it kept me on the edge of my seat but personally, it is not a groundbreaking piece of literature...it was nevertheless buzzworthy...

see thats why im pissed.. people dont know how talented i am.. in everything.. i mean even my day 2 day sayings r amazing ;pp i should have a book written about me :) no?

erzulie> I agree. the books are very movie-scriptish... Especially Angels and Demons which is pure Hollywood. But DaVinci Code, as far as storytelling goes, was flawless... Maybe not ground-breaking literature, but flawless nonetheless...

7tenths> You mean confused and slightly worried? :P

Dr.Lost> Someone should write a book about your choice of profile pic.... :P

excuse you? ;pp im sorry babe, but i was told by 3 different chicks that i do actually look like him :)

Well, I will say that singers look more talented because they have an entourage..

But it's also nice at times, when you have trouble expressing yourself in words and someone else does it for you.

You know Krispy one of the reasons that you find what you think or feel in the words of others, could be due to the (no new Idea Concept)
which states that in our world no new ideas exist just new ways of exprecing old ideas!

make that 101! :/

Caff: hehehehe... yeah, author are loners...
