La Verita
I am a half kuwaiti/half american girl living in Kuwait. I am perpetually suspended in the granite hollow that fills the space between two worlds... Not quite who I am, not quite who I want to be... Cat-lover, poet, music-nut. I currently hold a PHD in both BS and Smartass. In short, I pitch my tent in the median of life..

Read. Its the only thing in life worth doing.

Skunk! This is for you. Its the video I was rambling on about in my last post. Cold War Kids, We used to vacation. I don't know why, but it seems like the kind of song you would like... I know that's weird considering I don't know you or your taste in music, but there it is... Enjoy!

There was some awful news in the paper today, which isn't saying much considering the news these days has two volumes; awful and awful-ler(?)... more awful. But this was really bad.

Apparently, they found 14 horse carcasses thrown out into the big sandy lot that sits beside the Hunting and Equestrian Club just outside of 6th ring road. This really says a lot for the level of professionalism here in Kuwait, doesn't it? The fact that the very facility whose job it is to care for these animals ends up dumping their bodies like yesterdays' trash. Apparently, the horses hadn't been shot, but appeared to have been euthenized, the horses were 2-5 years old. This just makes my blood boil. I mean, aside from it being completely inhumane, its also a public health issue. The last thing we need is 14 dead horses rotting in the sun next to residential areas. The Equestrian club should be shut down or fined drastically for this unbelievably shameful act.

Another article in the paper today was talking about education in Kuwait and the Arab world as a whole. Dr. Latefa Al-Kandari, a professor at Kuwait University, blamed unqualified teachers for the decline of education standards in Kuwait. I'll agree with that, but it is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the things that are wrong with the public school system. I am a product of that system and I shudder when I think of how I would have ended up if my mom (whose an english teacher) hadn't shoved books down my throat throughout my school years. Dr. Al-Kandari is quoted as saying that reading is the cornerstone of learning and I couldn't agree more. Teaching your children to love reading and to respect the written word is one of the best gifts you can give them. I think it is akin to that whole "teaching a man to fish" analogy. Teach a kid to read (and love it) and he's set for life. She did say that the Arab world had the worst education system in the world... I think that's a bit of an exaggeration... surely, its not the worst... What about Sudan? I'm sure we beat Sudan... or Benin or somewhere like that...

Saudi Arabia continues to voice its concerns about the "sectarian violence" in Iraq. They take swipes at Iran 'cos the Saudis have always hated Iran, but I think the real threat to stability in Iraq is Syria. I find it unsettling that Iran keeps blowing its horns about diplomacy in Iraq and US withdrawal and the whole time Syria remains silent, or in any case more silent than Ahmedinajad. Syria is backing whoever can pay it more; they love the fact that there's so much instability in this region. The real enemy to democracy here isn't Iran, its Syria.

Yay!
You changed back to the template i like :*

(News = stress....i dont read)

that's why i skip most of the papaer and only read the economic section :p everything else is trash.

1) Human rights let alone animal rights have never been a high priority for Kuwaitis in aggregate.

2) Regardless of pointless benchmarking of our education system against those of others, let us concurr that it is shit, and that for a country of such immense wealth and pride we are shamefully behind with regards to education and investing in its future. Parliament sessions devoted to debating loans or segregating universities is obviously more important.

3) Solar Alchemist, you are dismissing a large portion of information of which a significant portion will evolve into what you term "economic". Social and political issues are themselves a fundamental element of Economics by definition.

Amen :)

I've always blamed my shitty arabic on my old school. I was in a private school, and sure they got me to love reading books to some extent but the problem is they stopped at English books and as a result my arabic is embarassing! So yea our system is shit :P

oo and the killers rock ! you shoulda seen the fit i threw when it came out and i couldnt get me hand on it back in dubai :p

thats a sad story.. sick..

i posted looosaaa go read, this one is interesting for a change ;p

ooooh i did quite like that video. not quite what i normally listen to, but good song still :P

solar alchemist, entre is right, political shite, as shite as it may be are what moves the markets, and by ignoring youre missing out on the real reasons why markets move. economics, finance, the stockmarket,.... its all about people and their primal instincts of fear, greed and retribution.

syrias silence, both now and during the lebanon crisis stems from their desire to launch their own proper stock exchange. if you go back to the news archives, you'll find that there was a lot of hype about a syrian market leading up to the lebanese crisis, which is why the israelis decided to move when they did. basically they knew syria would keep quiet.

syria is definately one half of a threat to the region, but yeah i'm betting that theyre waiting by the phone for the saudi money to call.

It's a pity to read these articles....the video is great!

The article regarding the Hunting and Equestrian Club is just insane. It defies all logic for them to do that, and yet...

About the reading. Hear, Hear. To quote Xander from Buffy, "To read makes our speaking English good."

Also, hi!
