Apocolypse Now....

Pope Benedict XVI ("The Pope") has fanned the fires of anti-western sentiment this past week by quoting from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Christianity and Islam.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'"

The pope neither condemned nor supported the opinion put forth in the dialogue. However, in the Arab world we have a saying. "i'sokoot 3alamat i ritha" Which means basically that "Silence is acceptance." So, the pope, by not condemning the words in the quote would appear to be supporting the sentiment.

Ok, first of all, all religions have been propagated through the sword! In order to set up a foundation for a new religion, it is necessary to stand up and fight against established religions operating in the same region that you wish to share. For example, Jews had to fight against polytheists in their region i.e. the Jordan Plain. Muslims had to fight against polytheists in Mecca. And if you want to talk about evil and inhuman, crack open a book on the Crusades and Papal Inquisitions of the thirteenth century. And those crusades were against 'Christians'.

Let me just say that I don't think the pope was intentionally trying to get Muslims riled up... I mean, seriously, who would want to do that at this point? I do think that it was an ignorant and, largely irrelevant, remark to make. Especially considering the delicate situation that the world is in and the heightened religious sensitivities.

Bottom line: He should have known better than to say that.

As a, some would say natural, result of those remarks, Muslims around the world have been protesting, issuing threats against the Vatican demanding a personal apology from the pope.

The protesting (so long as its peaceful) is fine.... The demands for a personal apology is fine... But the burning of churches? The threats to suicide bomb the vatican? That, I can not condone.

Why does everyone have such a hard time remembering the days when Jews, Muslims and Christians all co-existed peacefully. Religious tolerance is not a sign of weakness.
Religious moderation should not be seen as a threat.

On to... shall we say... weirder news?

A Starbucks customer in the US who was told her free drink voucher was worthless is launching a $114m (£60m) lawsuit against the coffee colossus. (Bitch..)

Starbucks pulled the free drink offer, saying it had been redistributed beyond its original intent.

The woman's lawyer says $114m equals the cost of drinks for all those turned away when the company decided to cancel its offer. ($114 million?! Bowg ashkara ya3ny?)

He hopes millions of other disappointed customers will join the legal effort.

The company originally e-mailed the offer to employees in the south-east of the US, with instructions to forward it to family and friends. Like many popular things on the internet, the e-mail quickly got out of control, being forwarded to perhaps millions of people around the country and posted on websites.

When Starbucks realised how many people were coming in for their free drink, it rescinded the offer. (Maybe 'cos their in the business of making money, not losing it...)

But one customer in New York city felt so betrayed she approached a lawyer. (Bitch...)

He is accusing the company of fraud and is requesting class action status for the lawsuit, hoping to sign-up countless others around the country who also missed out on their free drink.

Legal experts do not think the case has much chance of winning. (Duh.)

as evil as starbucks is, 114mill is a bit extreme.
and as evil as starbucks is i still cant kick my daily morning frappacino habit.

perhaps the thing about moderation is that it onlycomes about aftr extremism has trully run its course and really disgusted a religions followers. islam is still a relatively young religion compared to the other two majors so saddly phase extremism might have only just begun.

and it isnt restricted to religion either,.. as recently as ww2 and the holocaust, average germans had no real idea about what was going on, nevertheless many supported the third reichs assertions that the jews were the cause of their misery.
the japanese demonised, or worse dehumanised the rest of the world to the point where chinese and koreans were used as lab rats in chemical weapons development. to date they are still some of the most rascist people on the planet :P

its not the religion on its own, its mass psychology and the manipulation of it by power hungry self serving idiots.

Forget the Pope.

I want the number of the lawyer who's suing Starbucks!

Can you imagine the settlement on that thing?!

I mean, granted, it's a ridiculous lawsuit that is completely unfounded, but Starbucks JUST MIGHT settle.

Funny that the Pope is attacking Islam, while Kuwait Ministry of information is protecting Christianity by Banning the Da Vincy Code from Local theatres :)

I have a lot to say about the Pope, but here is a short-short version: He could have started World War 3. No joke.

As for the Starbucks lady, I think it echoes exactly what happened with the lady who sued McDonalds for the too-hot coffee, or the kid that was suing his dad because he slipped on some icy stairs in front of his house: That Americans are outta control when it comes to suing. Why can’t the court’s responses (to all of these cases) be, “Tough break kid, better luck next time. We have more serious cases to handle, now get outta here.”

Ya no the pope should have known better. But the violent reactions that came as a result only reinforced what he was saying in the eyes of the non-muslim public.

As for starbucks, they kinda deserve it. I love starbucks and all, but come on, this is the internet age, if your gonna send something for free and then as the public to forward it then ofcourse its gonna get out of hand. They should fire the genius that came up with this idea.

anyho, very cool post and sexyback rocks!! -I never found justin hot but he surprised me in this video.
