The Backstory: Day II

'Avenged Sevenfold is such an aggressive sound.' She thought as Bat Country screamed out of her cell phone. She refused to open her eyes, fearful that the resilient afternoon sun streaming through her west-facing window would scorch her retinas. She blindly stretched her hand towards her night stand, feeling around for her phone. Avenged Sevenfold segued into their second verse, with a tone she was convinced was mocking her failure to shut them up. She opened her eyes, slowly at first, hesitantly... Except for the flashing of her cell, the room was completely dark. She looked over the edge of the bed and found her cell vibrating happily on the floor.

"What?" She half-whimpered into the mouthpiece, not even bothering to check the identity of the caller.
"Why are you still asleep?" Hawk's voice thundered down her ear canal, chasing away any last vestiges of sleep.
"What?"
"Why are you still asleep? It's almost eight!"
"So?"
"So? Party... tonight... Mo's house...? Any of this ringing a bell?"
"Mo's?"
"Moses, Deana! Are you on something? What the hell is wrong with you?" He had obviously reached the end of his rope and, possibly, his sanity.
"Nothing." She sighed, sitting up in bed. "Where are you?"
"On my way there. 3al khaleej"
"Fine. I'll meet you there. Give me a half hour."
"Fine."

Moses Khaleel was an interesting character; the kind of person that you just had to see to believe. He was tall and skinny with a mass of angry black curls for hair. He was the quintessential menace to society. Moses was the one who, from KG up to senior year, consistently got Hawk in trouble. Ironically, he was also the one who always got them out of it. You see, Moses had connections... of the familial variety. In short, no one could touch him. Hawk liked to joke that if Moses were ever to take up the craft of a Superhero, he would undoubtedly be InvinciMan. Moses always cracked on Hawk about what a lame Superhero name that was, he preferred, and always would prefer, The Untouchable. Moses was creativity. He defined it, bordered it, outlined and underlined it; he was bold and eternally justified. He had a private studio in his basement where he worked with all sorts of musicians, both nationally and internationally. He was always coming up with stuff. He had given Hawk his nickname in the fourth grade when Hawk had spotted, chased and caught a desert rat on a science trip to the northern fields. The name, like the friendship, had stuck.

The only serious rift in their friendship came sophomore year of high school, when Deana had transferred in. She became a school-wide hit, some said she was already a nation-wide sensation. Girls despised her; from her near-perfect complexion and fiercely green eyes to her dancers' form. Conversely, naturally, boys adored her. She was a perfect being in their eyes, something to rival even the most digitally perfected anime' character. She walked the halls, seemingly oblivious to her surroundings. But she was aware, she knew how people saw her, what they saw, what they hated or loved. She just didn't care.

Hawk would always assert that that quality was what initially attracted him to her. Moses always laughed and said that was bullshit and that Hawk had been attracted to her for the same reason every other guy in school had been attracted to her, he was a horny teenager. No mystery or fanciful dressing required. Moses and Hawk both pursued her aggressively that first year, losing each others' friendship in the process. When it became clear, by summers' end, that neither of them was making any headway (pun intended), they fell back into their friendship. And, somehow, Deana fell into it too. They figured having her around as a friend was better than nothing at all....

Am I first? *bounces with glee* Obviously I haven't been checking here from time to time hoping for more of this. Yay, backstory to the backstory. Background information, geekiness, high school references! *bounce* Too much sugar! Oh wait that's not the story that's me. To tell you the truth, as much as I like your protagonist, I've taken a real shine to Hawk. You have a way of creating characters that feel like old friends. If these were real people they'd be the ones you tell "I've just met you but I fell like I've known you for years." Brava. I wonder what’ll happen at the party. *cue ominous music*

Lol @ Snocone as she bounces by

Hmmmm I like quite a bit about Mo, though Hawks name takes the cake ;). The length you have maintained is just perfect, it makes the reader want more.

Lol, that image in your previous post seems to also remind me of an egyptian cat sculpture.

snocone> LOL! I'm glad ur interested in the story... The characters seem very real to me.. so much so that I find myself having their conversations running in my head all day... more to come ;)

jitterbug> its interesting to see what people are seeing in that image :D i didn't see the egyptian cat but now that u mention it, it does show up :D

Back to their Friendship is a great decision for all of them… I think they did the right thing because nothing at all is important than friendship… Even love

God bless all the friendships … (esheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!) ;p
