La Verita
I am a half kuwaiti/half american girl living in Kuwait. I am perpetually suspended in the granite hollow that fills the space between two worlds... Not quite who I am, not quite who I want to be... Cat-lover, poet, music-nut. I currently hold a PHD in both BS and Smartass. In short, I pitch my tent in the median of life..

A few of my least favorite things....

1. Ticking Clocks
2. Rooms that have more DVDs than books
3. People who drive at night with no lights on
4. The maddeningly difficult security tape that's wrapped around the edges of DVD boxes... I always chips my nails on them.
5. Al Gore
6. Screaming children (especially the ones on Super Nanny.
7. Skinny bitches ( This applies to both women and freakishly small dogs.)
8. Really fruity perfume.
9. People who drink a hot drink in a paper cup with a straw... so annoying.
10. Guys in V-necked t-shirts... bad, very bad.
11. People who think of what they want to say next instead of listening.
12. Birds

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now.

Damn, PMS is a biatch...

Soundtrack to my Life --

We're all familiar with how music can affect situations. The right Buddha Bar beat can lounge-ify any setting, Freestyler is sure to pump up any party and Barry White is practically guaranteed to get you laid... Music has the unique ability to color our lives and imprint certain memories with the pulses and lyrics of the song. So that when you hear that song again, regardless of whether its the next day or ten years later, just hearing the song will somehow take you back to that setting.

Not all songs are connected to happy memories though, some of them can carry the residue of broken relationships, family strife and general cloudiness. Some songs that are a bit tainted for me, yet no less enjoyable include:

1. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
2. Common Pleasure - Jason Mraz
3. Strange Transmissions - The Peter Malick Group ft. Norah Jones
(Which is nonetheless a hauntingly beautiful melody.)

All in all though, songs tend to have very pleasurable moments attached to them, at least in my case. They have marked the chapters of my life, heightened experiences, and enlightened my suroundings, bringing environments and situations into focus and allowing me to see the world as it truly is.

So, in extreme summary, I present to you... The Score of my Life...

1. The City of Blinding Lights is forever tucked into the caverns of my heart.

The song that highlights my two month stay in New York over Christmas of '05 is "Dance, Dance" by Fall Out Boy. The song reminds me of skating at Rockefeller Center, skipping down 5th avenue with my two best friends singing the lyrics at the top of our lungs and not giving a damn about what anyone thought. It makes me think of MTV2 and underground music clubs, thick with smoke and the whine of guitar riffs.

2. Living the Renaissance

Italy - Summer '05, I spent two weeks touring every church I could find in Rome. I went on an Angels & Demons (Dan Brown Novel) tour that highlighted everything in the book and also served to illustrate the fiction that abounds in the novel.

But, the song that says "Rome" to me is "Feel Good Inc." by The Gorillaz. I first heard the song while changing clothes in my apartment overlooking the Spanish Steps. Since that day, every time I hear the song, it takes me back to Rome, to freshwater fountains, to gelato, to Giordano Bruno and to sunsets over bell-towers...

3. Gay it Forward

It was the summer of 2003. My best friend and I spent the summer sojourned in San Francisco, The Jewel of the Bay. We were actually taking up residence in one of the dormitories of UC Berkeley, but we might as well have stayed in SF since we spent every waking minute there.

It was the summer of Train and cable cars. As in riding the cable cars from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf and back and spending a day walking around Berkeley campus with Train's "My Private Nation" album on permanent repeat.
I even got Fireberry, who has strictly 'make me dance' taste in music, got hooked on one of their songs. That's why whenever I hear "Calling All Angels" it makes me think of me and her trying on clothes in Wet Seal and panting our way up and down the hills of San Francisco.

4. Preppy in London pre-Mellenium Wheel

Summer of 98. Me, my mom and big bro spent the summer in London. One of the few trips to London that I actually enjoyed... I usually prefer to remain state-side..

This was the summer my obsession with Robbie Williams officially began. I spent the summer with "I've Been Expecting You" on repeat and "Phoenix from the Flames" Going round and round in my head.

Its eight years later and Robbie Williams still does something to me that I can't quite explain.

5. The Beginning of an Era

Fall of '95 - I was in Junior High, had just moved to a new school in a new neighborhood and didn't know anyone. In public schools, we used to have a day of the semester called an "Open Day" which basically meant that we could discard our checkered uniforms in favor of anything we wanted to wear, classes were suspended and we spent the school day any way we wanted... talking, laughing, playing, eating.. etc. etc.

Well, I had brought a small portable CD player with me to school that day along with my brand new Mariah Carey cd. "Fantasy" was just starting for the third time when this little bundle of black curls came my way, asking if she could hang out and listen to the cd. I said sure and eleven years later she is still my best friend, the one who can tell everything I am feeling from a look, the one I can never hope to lie to 'cos she will pick up on it in a second.

We still get a kick out of the fact that Mariah Carey brought us together...

6. Bad hair and worse clothes...

The 80's were somewhat of a blur for me 'cos I was born in 83.. but I do have a soundtrack running through my head when I think of 80's moments. Sadly, that soundtrack is mostly country due to my mom's influence over my music when I was a child. Randy Travis, George Strait, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson all make appearances in this soundtrack.

Another person that had a big imprint on my psyche in the 80's and early 90's was Tiffany. Do you all remember Tiffany? The one-hit-wonder that sang the, now that I think of it, slightly provocative "I think we're alone now.. doesn't seem to be anyone around.." That song always reminds me of Full House 'cos I used to be addicted to that show and they did an episode featuring Tiffany.

...... That's as far back as my memory stretches... I know there are some songs that I forgot and will probably hear at some point and remember, but ... I told you it was gonna be a summary.

Apocolypse Now....

Pope Benedict XVI ("The Pope") has fanned the fires of anti-western sentiment this past week by quoting from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Christianity and Islam.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'"

The pope neither condemned nor supported the opinion put forth in the dialogue. However, in the Arab world we have a saying. "i'sokoot 3alamat i ritha" Which means basically that "Silence is acceptance." So, the pope, by not condemning the words in the quote would appear to be supporting the sentiment.

Ok, first of all, all religions have been propagated through the sword! In order to set up a foundation for a new religion, it is necessary to stand up and fight against established religions operating in the same region that you wish to share. For example, Jews had to fight against polytheists in their region i.e. the Jordan Plain. Muslims had to fight against polytheists in Mecca. And if you want to talk about evil and inhuman, crack open a book on the Crusades and Papal Inquisitions of the thirteenth century. And those crusades were against 'Christians'.

Let me just say that I don't think the pope was intentionally trying to get Muslims riled up... I mean, seriously, who would want to do that at this point? I do think that it was an ignorant and, largely irrelevant, remark to make. Especially considering the delicate situation that the world is in and the heightened religious sensitivities.

Bottom line: He should have known better than to say that.

As a, some would say natural, result of those remarks, Muslims around the world have been protesting, issuing threats against the Vatican demanding a personal apology from the pope.

The protesting (so long as its peaceful) is fine.... The demands for a personal apology is fine... But the burning of churches? The threats to suicide bomb the vatican? That, I can not condone.

Why does everyone have such a hard time remembering the days when Jews, Muslims and Christians all co-existed peacefully. Religious tolerance is not a sign of weakness.
Religious moderation should not be seen as a threat.

On to... shall we say... weirder news?

A Starbucks customer in the US who was told her free drink voucher was worthless is launching a $114m (£60m) lawsuit against the coffee colossus. (Bitch..)

Starbucks pulled the free drink offer, saying it had been redistributed beyond its original intent.

The woman's lawyer says $114m equals the cost of drinks for all those turned away when the company decided to cancel its offer. ($114 million?! Bowg ashkara ya3ny?)

He hopes millions of other disappointed customers will join the legal effort.

The company originally e-mailed the offer to employees in the south-east of the US, with instructions to forward it to family and friends. Like many popular things on the internet, the e-mail quickly got out of control, being forwarded to perhaps millions of people around the country and posted on websites.

When Starbucks realised how many people were coming in for their free drink, it rescinded the offer. (Maybe 'cos their in the business of making money, not losing it...)

But one customer in New York city felt so betrayed she approached a lawyer. (Bitch...)

He is accusing the company of fraud and is requesting class action status for the lawsuit, hoping to sign-up countless others around the country who also missed out on their free drink.

Legal experts do not think the case has much chance of winning. (Duh.)

Let's hear it for the Otakus!

There's a revolution happening around the world... The Otakus are winning every damn competition there is! Its starting in the US... the geeks are being celebrated for who they are! Gone are the days of rediculing the helplessly uncool for not being part of the "in" crowd... Hell, these days, the geeks are the "in" crowd!

So, allow me to take a moment to celebrate the Otakus!

Exhibit A: Winner of season 4 of Last Comic Standing...

Exhibit B: Winner of season 1 of Last Comic Standing....

Exhibit C: Winner of season 5 of American Idol

Exhibit D: Winner of season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance?

Exhibit E: The Original Otaku

Pretty convincing, don't ya think?

I say its about time the geeks took over!

I got the J street blues...

If this is true, John Mayer ra7 i6ee7 min 3ainy ib shakil moo 6abee3y! (Skunk: That means John Mayer is going to fall out of my eyes.... wait... that doesn't really translate... It means he's gonna lose some of his credibility. There you go, that's what it means)

Shinoo ya3ny he goes for Miss. Yeah-but-is-this-chicken?! I'm all for opposites attracting and what-not, but this is rediculous! What could he possibly see in her? I mean, yeah the chick is hot and she's got a slamming body, but I would think that John Mayer (on account of his songs) would see beyond superficial stuff like that. The girl is a bimbo with a capital- B! And to all you Jess fans out there, I'm sorry, but I don't buy the whole "I'm just acting stupid." bit. No one is that good of an actress. Even Nick Lachey, who isn't really cooking on all four burners either, got sick of her eventually. 3ayal someone as smart and insightful as John Mayer ishbisowy feeha?

I think its just a fling... She's going around banging all the hot, 'legit' musicians. She started with what's-his-face from Maroon 5 and now she's attacking John Mayer... I say 'fine', if John Mayer wants to bang her a couple of times... whatever, you know?... its his life... but if he starts seriously dating her, shit... his credibility is gonna fly out the window!

Note to Jess: This is not how you gain credibility.

How about singing one song where it doesn't sound like you're having an orgasm in the middle of it? How about writing one song that doesn't talk about how great it was that you saved yourself for marriage? How about that? Hell, even your little sister manages to inject a little raw emotion into her songs! but you? nooooooooo, its all about the ooooh's and aaaaaah's and nothing-but-T-shirts-on's!

9ij maskhara... (Skunk: that means "What a load of crap")

oh and P.S. Bush? Islamofascist is not a word just because you wanna make it one!
