Almost everyone who knows me is well aware of my infatuation with food. Seriously I’m not kidding. I’ll eat just about anything from raw oysters to snails; I’m very experimental when it comes to food. Yet I believe Ramadan is about acquiring patience and high virtues and appreciating the good things in life which is why I try not to complain too much about the fact that I don’t get to eat as much.
On the other hand, some people have no respect for Ramadan or religion for that matter!! If you don’t want to fast – don’t, just no need to gloat about it and rub in our faces! I was at Sultan Center one afternoon and I was standing in line holding a bunch of items at the cashier when this guy stepped in line. He had his black hair gelled back, well-groomed eye brows, a hint of mascara on his already long eye-lashes and was wearing black leather pants in summer!! Can you believe that?? Talk about style….
Anyway that wasn’t even the worst part of it. He was impatiently fidgeting with his keys in one hand and holding a pack of cigarettes in the other, sighing “Come one…What’s taking so long?? Some of us have to get back to their homes and have lunch!!”
Stone-faced we were all staring at him as we heard a voice blurt out, “Why, aren’t you fasting?”
He effortlessly replied, “No I’ve got an excuse, I’m psychologically ill!” not directing it to anyone in particular. And with that he dumped his things on the counter and walked out the door.
Was he for real?? Since when does being gay qualify as an excuse not to fast and to express it so openly like its completely normal and accepted in our society? What the hell??
